“Still in pain”: World champion struggles months after fall

It was the first World Cup slalom after the golden coronation in Saalbach-Hinterglemm: Just eight days after her brilliant ride to gold at the Ski World Championships, Camille Rast opened the slalom in Sestriere and delivered a solid performance – but at the third-to-last gate, the 26-year-old tangled up and fell. The Swiss skier slid into the finish area, initially remained lying there for a few moments, and eventually got up under her own power. At first glance, Rast seemed to be fine. However, due to persistent pain – fluid had accumulated in her hip – medical intervention was necessary a few days later.

But that wasn't the end of the story. Even about six months later, Rast is still struggling with the consequences of the fall. "I'm still in pain. Not now, but every now and then it comes back," she explained in an interview with the Swiss View and referred to the pain in her left hip. She hadn't sustained a typical injury like a fracture or tear at the time. So, how did these symptoms arise?

Pain can last up to two years "One part of her body was stuck to the snow, and the other kept sliding," recalled fitness coach Florian Lorimier. "This caused friction between two muscle groups, which is very painful. We've already had to drain fluid from that area twice. This is because the body can't absorb it." Normally, such restrictions can last up to two years, "but with Camille, it should be gone sooner. We're on the right track," said the coach.

Rast herself has certainly come to terms with the situation. "I can do all the exercises I want again. Every now and then I just have to moderate the amount if it hurts," she said. Apart from that, the start to her preparation has been promising, and she has left the strains of the past season behind her. "I was able to completely switch off after the winter," said Rast, who admitted, however, that even she now has to get used to snow and skiing again. "Just a few days ago I briefly watched the replay of the World Cup slalom. I wanted to learn how to ski again," the Swiss said jokingly.
