Controversy continues: Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) head coach Assinger is gone.
Roland Assinger's resignation as head coach of the women's ski team did not come as a surprise to Christian Mitter. The Austrian Ski Federation's (ÖSV) Alpine Director is currently exploring the market for a successor.

“We’re not looking for a football coach. It has to be a professional, of course,” Mitter said on the sidelines of the World Cup final in Kvitfjell. He added, “We need a German-speaking solution because there’s a lot of communication required.”
The leadership position is not easy to fill. The requirements are demanding, the market limited. A head coach in the World Cup circuit needs not only sporting expertise, but is also, and perhaps primarily, a manager and organizer. And ideally, as a leader, he is also a trusted confidant. "Such a position is always difficult to fill because you're filling many gaps in the day-to-day operations. But life goes on. I'm still here and can help with the transition," said Mitter. The long-time head coach of the Norwegian men's team also served as head coach of the Austrian women's team from 2019 to 2022.
Successor? Hütter spreads gossip.
“The only thing that’s important to me is that there’s a certain calmness within the team. And that there are people in the background who manage things so well that we really only have to concentrate on winding down,” said speed specialist Cornelia Hütter. As an Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) athlete, she travels the world as a large group. She sees the travel during the season as a potential major energy drain. So far, it’s worked well.“I believe a worthy successor will be found. I trust the system because there is a wealth of experience,” said Hütter. When asked whether she uses gender-inclusive language or if there are concrete indications of a woman taking over as head coach, Hütter said: “At the end of the season, you have to let a little gossip in.” However, there are very few women in genuine leadership positions in the World Cup.
After controversy: Female athletes thank Assinger
Assinger recently declined an offer for a new two-year contract. He said he needed a change of scenery but could imagine remaining in Austria in a different capacity. "Because it's important to me to give skiing a boost," he explained. After the end of last season, the brother of TV presenter and ski expert Armin Assinger faced considerable criticism. World champion Stephanie Venier described his management style as very harsh and disrespectful. Nevertheless, Assinger was re-elected a year ago with the support of the federation and the athletes.Stefanie Venier was successful in sports, but her relationship with Assinger didn't work out. © APA / EXPA/JOHANN GRODER
Hütter was considered a supporter of Assinger. "I voiced certain things that I felt were true. It's a shame he's leaving. But I understand him." Assinger had done a good job, said Mirjam Puchner. "He also had some critical words, but as an athlete, you have to be able to deal with that and put it into perspective," the downhill skier added.
“A huge thank you is in order; I already had him in the European Cup. He motivated us.” Nina Ortlieb added that Assinger wouldn't be easy to replace: “We've known Roland for a very long time; he has many good qualities. But I trust Christian Mitter to find a suitable successor.”
