Italy's Olympic ski champion: good luck in love, bad luck in gaming

One of the most famous slalom races in the world is coming up on Sunday: the 2024 Kitzbühel winner will be played on the Ganslernhang. There is a surprise in Italy's squad.

Six Azzurri will tackle the slalom in Kitzbühel, including the South Tyroleans Alex Vinatzer, Tobias Kastlunger and Simon Maurberger. But one prominent name is missing: Giuliano Razzoli. The old master will not take part in the prestigious run on the Ganslernhang.

It's been a plague season for Razzoli so far. The 2010 Olympic slalom champion did not make it into the second round in either Gurgl or Madonna di Campiglio. At the turn of the year, the 39-year-old was injured in a training fall that forced him to take a break. Although he returned to the slalom stage in Wengen last week, it was more of a struggle than a fight. Razzoli is now missing from the Azzurri squad again, and it is extremely questionable whether he will be there in Schladming next Wednesday.

At least Razzoli is lucky in love. On Christmas Day, the veteran announced to his fans that he was going to be a dad for the first time. “There is special news for us,” wrote Razzoli on Instagram alongside a photo that shows him with his pregnant wife Elisa. Razzoli is still the last Olympic champion among Italy's men's skiers.
