Young Azzurra makes a statement but is disqualified

At the European Cup women's giant slalom, a young Italian woman made a big statement with a brilliant victory.

Ambra Pomaré was in a class of her own in the giant slalom in Switzerland on Monday. The 20-year-old from Cortina left second-placed Austrian Viktoria Bürgler behind by 1,64 seconds. Pomaré was already in the lead after the first run. In the end, she celebrated her first victory and also her first podium place in the European Cup.

Third place went to the Frenchwoman June Brand, who was already more than 2 seconds behind. In total, four Azzurre finished in the top 10. Among them was the South Tyrolean Laura Steinmair in ninth place. The 24-year-old from Olang lost a total of 3,27 seconds to the outstanding Pomaré.

Suddenly disqualified

After the race, however, Pomaré received shocking news. She was disqualified by the FIS because she had allegedly made a false start in the second run. Pomaré is said to have not kept to the starting times and catapulted herself out of the start house too early. The Italian winter sports association reacted with great incomprehension to the FIS's decision.
