The reigning Olympic slalom champion Clement Noel leads the provisional entry list for the European Cup slalom in Obereggen, which will take place on the challenging Maierlpiste slope this Thursday, December 15th. Prominent names While the Norwegian defending champion Alexander Steen Olsen is not registered, last year's second-place finisher Anton Tremmel (Germany) and last year's third-place finisher Albert Popov (Bulgaria) are on the provisional entry list, which can still change by Wednesday evening. Popov finished an excellent eleventh in Val d'Isere on Sunday. The co-favorites in Obereggen - at least according to the current FIS points rankings - also include the Swiss Luca Aerni, the Austrian Marc Digruber and the two Croatians Istok Rodes and Samuel Kolega, who were first and third together on the winner's podium in Obereggen in 2018. The Azzurri are hoping for the surprise tenth from Val d'Isere Tobias Kastlunger as well as Matteo Canins, Federico Liberatore and Hans Vaccari. Preparations are in full swing in Obereggen. After the Maierlpiste slope, with its gradient of up to 55 percent, was open to public skiing until yesterday, Sunday, it will be closed starting today, Monday. Today the preparation with the spray bar is on the agenda. “We are using the cold temperatures to be able to offer all athletes – including those with higher starting numbers – the best possible slope conditions on Thursday, as is our aim in Obereggen,” says race director and OK President Eduard “Edi” Pichler. He is at the head of the organizational team for SC Eggen, the Obereggen ski school, Obereggen Latemar AG and ASV Deutschnofen. Every year, the European Cup slalom in Obereggen not only serves as a form test for the athletes at the beginning of the season, but is often also a good omen for the season. Alexander Steen Olsen, for example, won the European Slalom Cup and two junior world championship titles after his triumph in Obereggen.
