Lindsey Vonn: A video causes amazement

On Tuesday, Lindsey Vonn caused a stir internationally when she announced her intention to compete in the Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympics despite a torn ACL. Following a video released on Thursday, there is now no doubt about the American's ambitious plans.

Normally, a torn cruciate ligament means a break of at least six months. However, different rules apply to exceptional athletes. Sofia Goggia, for example, won Olympic silver at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing just a few weeks after suffering a partial cruciate ligament tear. Lindsey Vonn is aiming for a similar feat after tearing her cruciate ligament in a crash in Crans-Montana last Friday. When many were already expecting her to withdraw from the Olympics, the 41-year-old announced that she would compete in Cortina – and is still aiming for victory.

That the American is serious about her ambitious goal should be clear since Thursday evening at the latest. Vonn posted a video on social media that is astonishing: In it, the 84-time World Cup winner can be seen lifting weights, working on her explosiveness, and practicing landings. There is no sign of any physical impairment.

Things get serious on Friday.

Ski fans will get a true picture of Vonn's fitness on Friday at the latest, when the first downhill training run takes place on the Olimpia delle Tofane. Because the American knows the course like the back of her hand (she's won there twelve times), she'll avoid taking risks in the training runs and only show her true colors on Sunday. Vonn will wear bib number 10 in the training run, which starts at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

The training runs are also important for Nadia Delago, who has to prevail against Elena Curtoni and Federica Brignone in the internal qualification. Recently, however, rumors have circulated that the skier from Aosta is only participating in the downhill training runs to best prepare for the Super-G. This would mean that only Delago and Curtoni would be vying for the remaining spot. Nicol Delago, on the other hand, is a guaranteed member of the Italian team.
