At 21 years old: Prominent skier retires in Austria

There was a prominent resignation in the Austrian ski scene on Sunday.

Angelina Salzgeber has unexpectedly ended her career – at just 21 years old. Her retirement came on the sidelines of the Austrian Super-G Championships, where she finished eighth in the final race of her career.

In her very personal farewell message, Salzgeber wrote: "This breaks my heart, but the little angel would be proud. I always wanted to be an Olympic champion, a world champion, and a world champion skier, but some decisions are out of our hands." She spoke openly about how she was often judged not by her own performance, but by the well-known name "Salzgeber," which was particularly stressful for her.

Daughter of two skiing greats

Angelina comes from a family with a passion for sports: Her mother, Anita Wachter, and father, Rainer Salzgeber, are both top skiers themselves. Her sporting career was marked by setbacks – including a serious fall in the 2022/23 winter that set her back for a long time. Angelina Salzgeber finished in the top 30 in the European Cup a total of five times, with 19th place being her best result.
