With a smile: Shiffrin's greeting from the sickbed

The descent in Cortina claimed many prominent victims on Friday. Including Mikaela Shiffrin, who fell but escaped unscathed. In the evening, the American superstar reported from his hospital bed.

There were terrible scenes that took place on the Olimpia delle Tofane. First Federica Brignone, then Mikaela Shiffrin, a little later Corinne Suter and Michelle Gisin: four of the best athletes in the ski circus didn't see the finish. While Suter with is out for the rest of the season due to a serious injury, Shiffrin could easily be given the all-clear. According to the US association, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in the left knee are intact.

“Thank you everyone for the support and well wishes,” Shiffrin wrote on social media: “I will share more information or updates as I know more. I'm very grateful that it's not worse, but I'm in a lot of pain at the moment." She will not take part in the races on Saturday and Sunday and will not start in the giant slalom at Kronplatz (Tuesday). “I need a little time to process everything with my team and see how I feel in the next few days.”

At least her teammates' performances put a smile on the American's face. Five made it into the points. Jacqueline Wiles achieved the best result in 13th place. “I can’t wait to watch the rest of the weekend,” Shiffrin concludes her message.
