With a new knee: Lindsey Vonn is working on her comeback

A few weeks ago, Vonn posted a video on Instagram showing her training in New Zealand. At first, the trip was interpreted as a PR stunt, but her intentions soon became more serious. Recently, Vonn appeared in Sölden, where she spent days making her turns on the glacier without a camera crew. Patrick Riml, Alpine boss of the Red Bull Ski Team, has now confirmed that Vonn will complete an intensive conditioning block in the coming weeks, followed by downhill training in Copper Mountain.

Her equipment supplier Head is also supporting the project. Race director Rainer Salzgeber explained at a press conference in Sölden: "We are supporting Lindsey with our own service man to help her coordinate her equipment." The service man, Chris Krause, has already looked after some of the biggest names in skiing, including overall World Cup winner Alexis Pinturault. Salzgeber was optimistic: "I'm hoping for Lindsey. Her comeback would be a great story."

No problems thanks to new knee? Vonn's career was marked by numerous injuries. Despite numerous victories, she often fought against her physical limits. In 2019, she retired from active racing after winning a bronze medal at the World Championships in Aare. At that point, she had already undergone several operations on her right knee, including the implantation of a titanium partial prosthesis. "I'm no longer in pain," Vonn explained in a recent interview after the operation. Nevertheless, observers report that her gait is still uneven in everyday life.

If Vonn does decide to make a comeback, she could benefit from an FIS wildcard like her colleague Marcel Hirscher, which would allow her to compete as a forerunner in races. Rumor has it that Vonn is aiming to make her return at the speed opener in Beaver Creek in December. Whether she will return to the World Cup or just compete as a forerunner remains to be seen. The fact is that the skiing scene is eagerly awaiting her decision.
