After Brignone's fall: First diagnoses come from Trento

Federica Brignone suffered a serious fall during the Italian Women's Giant Slalom Championships in Val di Fassa on Thursday, suffering a compound fracture of her lower leg. Further injuries are feared.

Just a few days ago, Federica Brignone was celebrating winning the overall World Cup and the giant slalom World Cup, and now this: Italy's skiing superstar has suffered a serious injury! The Lombardy native suffered a serious injury at the Italian Giant Slalom Championships on Thursday.

As confirmed by Italy's Winter Sports Federation (FISI), Brignone has suffered multiple fractures of the tibia and fibula in his left leg. There are also fears that his knee may have sustained more serious damage. However, further examinations, which will be conducted in Milan, will determine the outcome. The initial examinations were conducted in Trento.

How did the crash happen?

Brignone's arm tangled with the gate during a right-hand turn and she fell. She reportedly suffered injuries to her knee and lower leg. She subsequently hit the slope and landed a few meters away.

Ski rescue immediately rushed to Brignone. After initial treatment, the 34-year-old was transported by sled. At the finish area, Brignone was flown out by a rescue helicopter. The helicopter then transported Brignone—along with her brother, coach, and closest confidant, Davide—to the Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento.

The doctors in Trento are currently in contact with the medical department of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI). After the initial examinations in Trento, Brignone will be transferred to the Clinica della Madonnina in Milan, where the FISI doctors normally carry out their work.
