After being kicked out: World Cup winner breaks her silence

For years she was a fixture in the World Cup, but in April she was dropped by her federation. Now a Swiss speed specialist has spoken out emotionally.

At the end of April, the Swiss Ski Federation announced its squads for the new season. One name, however, was missing from the list: that of Priska Nufer-Ming. The 34-year-old, with 206 starts in the premier class of skiing, is considered a veteran, and she can even call herself a World Cup winner: In February 2022, the speed specialist achieved her first and only victory in the downhill race in Crans-Montana.

After a difficult period in her career, Nufer-Ming was not selected for the upcoming season. The Swiss athlete remained silent for weeks, but has now broken her silence on Instagram with an emotional statement.

“Some time has passed, and a lot has happened since then,” begins Nufer-Ming’s post. “I had been a member of the Swiss Ski team since 2008. At the end of April, I received the news that I was no longer part of the team. That was a tough moment, especially because I was in the middle of rehabilitation after my injury at that time,” the Swiss skier wrote.

The goal is the 2027 World Cup.

On February 27th of this year, Nufer-Ming injured her knee and had to undergo meniscus surgery, which brought her season to an early end. "Over all these years, I've met the team criteria and held my own at the highest international level in the World Cup. When I look back on the past 18 years, I don't see injuries or setbacks. I see countless days of training, hard work, many World Cup races, successes and joy, and the will to always improve."

Nufer-Ming maintains this determination even in these difficult times. The 34-year-old isn't thinking about retiring just yet. She wants to fight her way back on her own. "It was always clear to me that I would end my career the way I began it: healthy and through my own efforts. I work every day to come back stronger. The road is challenging, but my motivation is high," says Nufer-Ming.

Her main goal is to qualify for the 2027 World Championships in Crans-Montana, the very place where she once celebrated her greatest success.
