Retirement: The ski world loses a personality

Emotional scenes are guaranteed this weekend: A true legend of the ski scene is ending his career.

A packed program awaits at the speed weekend in Courchevel. Marco Odermatt can secure his first crystal globes, and the last tickets for the World Cup Finals will be awarded. And then there's the farewell of Adrien Theaux. The veteran Frenchman will be competing in the final races of his illustrious career.

“It will be a beautiful, intense and festive moment – full of emotions. You can’t spend your whole life in this wonderful world of skiing and then just turn the page without getting a lump in your throat,” said the 41-year-old.

In February 2004, Theaux made his World Cup debut; at the time, the new ski superstar Franjo von Allmen was just two and a half years old. To date, Theaux has amassed an impressive 334 races in the premier class of skiing. The Frenchman has stood on the podium 13 times, most recently achieving a top-three finish in the Wengen combined event in January 2016. The veteran has often been sidelined by injuries, but has always fought his way back admirably. A highlight was his bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Vail.

Things have been quieter for Theaux lately, with major successes eluding him. Nevertheless, he occasionally made headlines. For example, in December, at the impressive age of 41, he stormed to 9th place in Val Gardena. This weekend, his illustrious career comes to an end.
