At breathtaking speeds, the speed athletes race down notorious slopes like the Streif in Kitzbühel or the Stelvio in Bormio. Even the world's best skiers sometimes misjudge the situation – and fall heavily. The result is often long-term injuries that place a significant strain on the athletes, not only physically but also mentally.
Last winter, in addition to some top stars, such as Federica Brignone and Mikaela Shiffrin, numerous other athletes were affected. One story that caused particular attention and consternation was that of Cyprien Sarrazin.
During training in Bormio, the Frenchman was knocked off course by a wave and crashed heavily onto the slope. His season was immediately over. A period of surgeries followed – including one on his head – and a period full of doubt: Would he ever be able to return to the snow and join the world elite? As Sarrazin reported, the fall almost cost him his life. The latest news from the 30-year-old's camp is all the more encouraging – it should warm the hearts of many ski fans.
The Frenchman recently posted an update on his rehabilitation. With a broad grin and visibly in good physical shape, he showed himself training on the stationary bike and on the track. He wrote on his social media channels: "Back in the saddle... this feels really good!! We're taking it step by step, getting used to the feeling, the intensity again... stage by stage!"
Given the constant tragedy that athletes and fans in the ski world have to endure, the Frenchman's positive charisma seems all the more refreshing. Nevertheless, it must be said: Sarrazin is likely still at the very beginning of his journey. Whether he will be able to return to the World Cup after the summer break remains uncertain.
