Terrible fall: Concerns for Italy's skiing jewel

The final ski races are about to take place in Cortina d'Ampezzo. But now the Italian team has received some very bitter news.

The women's giant slalom takes place in Cortina d'Ampezzo on Sunday, and the Olympic ski program concludes with the slalom on Wednesday. Giada D'Antonio was scheduled to compete in that race. The 16-year-old from Naples is considered a skiing prodigy and is predicted to have a great future. But now Italy is worried about D'Antonio: she suffered a serious fall during training.


The teenage skier was in Toblach with Brignone and her teammates, where they were training giant slalom. D'Antonio caught her foot on a gate during her run and fell heavily, injuring her knee. As the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) announced early Saturday afternoon, a torn cruciate ligament is suspected. The diagnosis is now known.

D'Antonio made her Olympic debut on Tuesday, competing in the team combined event. However, she did not finish her slalom run. She was also scheduled to compete in the slalom on Wednesday.
