Julian Schütter: “Olaf Scholz, what’s wrong with you?”

In the past few days and weeks, former speed specialist Julian Schütter has repeatedly attracted attention for his environmental activism. Most recently, Schütter and supporters of the last generation disrupted the performance of Goethe's Faust in Vienna's Burgtheater and were given time to speak on stage after a half-hour disruption ( SportNews reported ). Now the 26-year-old turns to the German Chancellor with the question “Olaf Scholz, what’s wrong with you?” and calls on him to take action.

In the Instagram video, Schütter draws attention to the “Starve until you are honest!” campaign, which aims to hear the following statement spoken out loud by the German Chancellor: “The continued existence of human civilization is extremely endangered by the climate catastrophe. The CO2 content in the air is far too high (0,4 per mille). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows a path, the 1,5 degree path, with which humanity has the best chance of survival. This path has a target value of 0,35 per mille by 2150. This means that there are already hundreds of gigatons too much CO2₂ in the air. “We have to make a radical change now, even if it’s years late.”

Schütter points out that the statement is a scientific consensus. He also points out that some supporters of the campaign have not eaten anything for over two months and are in acute danger of their lives. According to Schütter, only the Chancellor can save these people. Since the statement would not be controversial in any way, Schütter is surprised at the Chancellor's long silence.

Most fans support the young ex-professional in his mission and thank him for his commitment. Many of them tag Scholz under the video in order to force the Chancellor to take action. “It really wouldn’t be that hard,” notes one user. Others are reluctant to acknowledge the protest: “Your own decision whether to eat or not. “I don’t care at all,” writes another user.

The two camps of the climate debate are becoming increasingly hardened: While the first catastrophic consequences of the crisis are making some parts of the world uninhabitable and winter sports are finding it more difficult every year to find regions where there is enough snow, others consider man-made climate change to be scaremongering. That's why the commitment of people like Schütter and the supporters of “Hunger until you're honest!” is even more important. It remains to be hoped that politicians will soon recognize this and give in.
