Alpine skiing: The big SportNews season review

Our athletes were far from able to keep up with the amazing 2007/2008 season, when seven World Cup victories were achieved, 19 podium places were achieved and 4174 points were collected. At that time, the South Tyrolean ski aces landed in the top ten 59 times, also the absolute highest in the long history of the Ski World Cup.

This year, Manfred Mölgg & Co. landed in the top ten 47 times, which corresponds to an increase of two results compared to the previous year. This is the third highest value in the “all-time” statistics.

In contrast to the previous year, when the South Tyroleans did not manage to win the World Cup, this year a local athlete, Christof Innerhofer, stood on the highest podium. At the Super Combined in Bansko, Bulgaria, “Winnerhofer” was at the top – it was the first victory for an “Azzurro” in this discipline.

There were six podium places, three fewer than in the 2009/10 ski winter. In addition to his already mentioned victory, Innerhofer came third in the descent on his favorite route, Bormio. No wonder that the 26-year-old Gaiser was the most successful athlete with 644 points and is eighth in the overall ranking.

Dominik Paris narrowly missed victory on the descent in Chamonix and came second, beaten only by Didier Cuche, who was almost unbeatable in January.

Mölgg's busiest points collector

In the women's category, Manuela Mölgg came third twice, once in the giant slalom at the start of the season in Sölden and once in Zagreb, when she climbed onto the podium in the slalom. With 309 points, she collected six points more than Hanna Schnarf - 22nd and 23rd place in the overall World Cup for the two South Tyroleans.

And then Denise Karbon climbed onto the podium again. In Špindlerův Mlýn in the Czech Republic she came second in the giant slalom. A sensational success considering that the 30-year-old from Castelrotto seriously injured her knee in November.

Garmisch: The World Cup of superlatives

The absolute highlight of the season was the World Cup and the association repeatedly emphasized over the course of the season that the title fights such as the World Championships and the Olympic Games have priority over the World Cup. In Garmisch, South Tyrol won five medals – more medals than ever before.

Christof Innerhofer alone won a complete set of medals in Garmisch, with gold in the super-G, silver in the super combined and bronze in the downhill. There were also two third places by Peter Fill (super combination) and Manfred Mölgg (slalom). The fact that there were a few fewer top results in the World Cup is perhaps one of the reasons - South Tyrol's ski fans will certainly forgive it thanks to this World Cup record.

Alpine skiing: The big SportNews season review

Last weekend the season came to an end in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, at the “Alpines”. The local athletes were about as successful as last year, as the point total was almost the same. With 2982 points there were 13 more than in the previous year.
