Ski star Sarrazin has to postpone comeback by a year

Shortly before the turn of the year, Cyprien Sarrazin suffered such a severe fall during downhill training in Bormio that his life was in danger. The Frenchman is now feeling better, although his comeback has been somewhat delayed.

When Cyprien Sarrazin crashed into the lower section of the Stelvio during the second downhill training session in Bormio on December 27, 2024, all spectators held their breath. The 30-year-old lay motionless. Everyone immediately realized the seriousness of the situation. That same evening, the French daredevil underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma in his brain. The return to everyday life proved difficult, but now Sarrazin sees light at the end of the tunnel.

"It's a miracle that I'm here after everything that's happened. The recovery is going well," he told the sports newspaper L'EquipeHis vision has fully recovered after being severely impaired as a result of the accident. He is currently working on rehabilitating his back and knee. "Not everything is rosy yet, but I can already do a lot of things again—like road cycling. I hope to be able to return to mountain biking soon," emphasizes the speed specialist.

Things are looking up

His return to skiing is also imminent. Sarrazin plans to make his first turns on snow in the fall, but doesn't want to put himself under any pressure. A racing comeback is out of the question for the upcoming season. "Of course, I'll do everything I can to be able to compete in races again. At the same time, I'm taking the necessary time and taking things step by step—that's crucial," explains Sarrazin, who also admitted to having considered retirement.

The Frenchman's long-term goal is the 2030 Olympic Games in his home country. "That's my big dream," Sarrazin concluded. No wonder, because despite his great successes, he has only competed in one Olympic Games. In 2022, he was eliminated in the giant slalom in Beijing. Since then, he has won the classic downhill race in Kitzbühel twice, among other events.
