Ski star Sofia Goggia: “I thought I was dead”

It's always like riding on a razor's edge when Sofia Goggia throws herself onto the World Cup slopes of the world. The 31-year-old from Bergamo is one of the fastest skiers on the planet - but also one of those who takes the most risks. When Goggia hops over a hill, when she throws herself into the curves, when she crouches down energetically - TV viewers often hold their breath.

This "all or nothing" riding style has brought the Italian numerous successes, including the 2018 Olympic victory. But it has also meant that Goggia has often ended up in hospital. The Italian has suffered seven serious injuries over the years. But the one she suffered last February hit her harder than any other before.

"In the first two months after the injury, I thought I was dead," said an emotional Goggia at the Italian Winter Sports Federation's media day. The 31-year-old broke her right shinbone and tibial ankle in a training fall. “Physically, mentally and emotionally it was a very difficult phase.” Sofia Goggia "When I fell that day, I was still sliding down the slope and knew that my leg was no longer in the ski boot. I thought I had to end my career. The first few months were hard, I thought I wouldn't make it. Physically, mentally and emotionally it was a very difficult phase. Only gradually did the situation improve," said Goggia emotionally.

World Cup race in December as goal The Azzurra is now full of energy again. A few weeks ago she had to undergo another routine operation to remove the screws. Now the skier from Bergamo has a big goal: she wants to take part in World Cup races this year. "At the beginning of November I will travel to North America, where I want to take part in the first speed races of the season in Beaver Creek in December."
