Pure excitement in Aare: Kugel rivals in the lead at halftime

The battle for the giant slalom globe in the women's alpine ski world cup became even more of a duel on Saturday in Aare, Sweden.

Local favorite Sara Hector was eliminated in the first run of the penultimate race of the season in this discipline, while the remaining competitors Camille Rast and Julia Scheib finished in first and second place.

Austrian Scheib is 0,11 seconds behind the Swiss woman, her lead over Rast in the discipline standings is 89 points.

American Paula Moltzan is within striking distance of the stage win, 0,56 seconds behind, as is New Zealander Alice Robinson, six-tenths of a second adrift. Hector, like Canadian Valerie Grenier, crashed out in the final sector after strong runs, at a tricky spot where significant changes in direction were required at high speed. Mikaela Shiffrin, who was leading, also crashed there. The American, who turned 31 on Friday, stayed on course, however, and is currently 12th, 2,29 seconds back.

Laura Steinmair from Olang missed the second run for the top 30, finishing 39th (+5,39 seconds). The decisive second run starts at 13 p.m. SportNews-Live ticker so you don't miss anything.
