South Tyrol's ski talents on the other side of the world

After successful and educational weeks, the young talents recently returned from Usuhaia. The responsible coaches – Enrico Vicenzi and Tizian Gabrielli – draw a very positive conclusion. A total of 17 days of skiing took place in the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego (Tierra del Fuego) for the nine-member young men's squad and the six-member young women's team. “The weather was very changeable, sometimes it snowed, sometimes it rained, sometimes the sun shone. “The weather often changed within an hour,” report Vicenzi and Gabrielli. But such conditions are ideal for preparing for the season: “There were always different conditions that we had to adapt to. “When you compete, you also have to adapt to the external circumstances,” say the two trainers. The focus was on race preparation in the various disciplines. “We were able to train slalom, giant slalom, downhill and super-G. The snow was always in good condition. It snowed heavily in the first few days, which is why we concentrated on the technical variants. When the weather got better, we were also allowed to go to the speed slopes and try our hand at it,” says Vicenzi. The new coach of the men's national squad traveled to Argentina with his nine protégés Jakob Franzelin, Raffael Hopfgartner, Matthias Kaufmann, Emanuel Lamp, Francesco Riccardo Zucchini, Marc Comploj, Jonas Feichter, Tommy Lochmann and Lukas Sieder, and Jonas Bacher has also expanded the squad . Selfies with the top stars What coach Enrico Vicenzi would also like to emphasize: “In these three weeks, the boys also learned what it’s like to be on your own as a professional. They had to pay attention to their diet, meet deadlines, and prepare for training – just like the professionals do in the World Cup. Because there were several World Cup riders in Ushuaia, they were also able to learn a lot from them. That certainly helped them and was something special,” says the coach from Trentino. His protégé Francesco Zucchini was also happy about his experiences: “It was a very nice few weeks in which we not only trained well, but also grew together as a team. The fact that skiing greats like Sofia Goggia trained alongside or even with us made it even better. You can learn from them just by watching,” said the youngster happily. Rita Granruaz from the women's national squad echoes the same sentiment: “The training went very well, sometimes the snow was more difficult, sometimes easier. It was very interesting, especially when you could watch the World Cup athletes at work.” Rita Granruaz traveled to Argentina with her coach Tizian Gabrielli and her teammates Bianca Gufler, Eva Sophia Blasbichler, Hanna Feichter, Leonie Girtler and Nora Pernstich. “Laura Steinmair also trained with us,” reports Gabrielli. “The training went well and we were also able to test out all the disciplines. It was also educational for the girls that we had so much access to the ski stars. The professionals were all very relaxed, gave the girls tips and were also on the same slopes. Of course, one or two selfies were taken,” smiles the women’s coach from the Unterland.
