Speed kickoff: Odermatt and a secret winner beam

The first Super-G of the 2025/26 season is history! On Thursday, the speed specialists took to the starting gate for the first time this winter, with two stars providing the biggest emotions.

Two races, two wins: Marco Odermatt is Mr. 100 Percent so far this season! After his opening victory in the giant slalom in Sölden, the Swiss superstar also flexed his muscles in the first Super-G of the winter. In Copper Mountain (USA), the four-time overall champion, who had been slightly ill in recent days, won the winter's speed opener.

It was a real nail-biter, down to the hundredth of a second, that unfolded in Colorado. Odermatt prevented an Austrian sweep of the podium: Vincent Kriechmayr (+0,08 seconds), Raphael Haaser (+0,13) and Stefan Babinsky (+0,39) finished behind him.

Kilde's emotional comeback

The winner on the official list is the Swiss skier, but the true winner in everyone's hearts is someone else. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde made his World Cup comeback after an almost two-year injury break. The Norwegian finished 24th in the final standings, but that was secondary on Thursday. Kilde showed with some powerful turns that he hasn't lost any of his skill. "We were equally fast at the top," analyzed winner Odermatt, adding: "He already showed some strong turns. You can tell he's still a bit cautious, but that will soon disappear."

Kilde suffered a serious crash in Wengen in January 2024, sustaining, among other injuries, a severe shoulder injury. The 33-year-old was forced to sit out an entire season, but now the superstar is back. Particularly touching: Kilde's fiancée, Mikaela Shiffrin, was at the finish line and couldn't hold back her tears. "I'm incredibly proud of him," the greatest female skier of all time told the press. ORF.

Struggling Paris misses out on top spots

There was also an emotional moment from Italy's point of view: Guglielmo Bosca, who missed almost the entire last season due to a broken fibula, celebrated his comeback and was promptly the best Azzurro, finishing eighth.

In the end, the South Tyrolean finished in 11th place. Christof Innerhofer came in 29th, while Florian Schieder failed to score any points.

The speed specialists are now moving to Beaver Creek, while the technical races continue in Copper Mountain. The men's giant slalom is scheduled for Friday (18 p.m./21 p.m. CET).
