Giorgia Collomb was considered the greatest talent in the Italian ski scene not too long ago. No wonder, as she finished in the top 15 of the World Cup at just 18 years old. Last season, however, the Aosta native's development stalled. Although she celebrated her first European Cup victory, Collomb failed to score any points in 14 of her 15 World Cup starts. Persistent back pain was a significant contributing factor.
As the 19-year-old announced on social media, she underwent surgery for a herniated disc at the Sedes Sapientiae Clinic in Turin. "Day zero for my back. After a lot of pain, it's time to start anew," the tech specialist commented, adding: "The sun will rise again."
Things are about to get better.
Collomb ended her season early and did not participate in the Italian Championships in Sestriere, where Anna Trocker won both the slalom and giant slalom. Just a few weeks earlier, Trocker, from Völs, had also dethroned Collomb as Junior World Champion in the giant slalom. In Trocker's victory, the defending champion finished only eleventh.Numerous fellow campaigners sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery – including Martina Peterlini from Trentino, who also suffered an injury at the beginning of April. had to undergo an operation.
