“Ti amo”: Ski ace with romantic marriage proposal

The likelihood that they would ever cross paths in their lives, let alone get engaged, was actually vanishingly small. After all, he's from Canada and she's from Italy. And yet, Erik Read and Giulia Paventa will soon be married. This completes the ski lovers' happiness.

Read is a long-time fixture in the skiing world. The 34-year-old has competed in the World Cup 188 times, participating in the Olympic Games and World Championships. The technical specialist has finished in the World Cup's top 10 eight times. His daughter, Giulia, was also a former skier and competed in the European Cup 31 times before retiring in 2022 and working as a ski instructor ever since.

Now the ski couple is romantically engaged. At Big Whitefish Lake in Ontario, Canada, Read got down on one knee in front of the love of his life and popped the question. The skier posted photos of this special moment on Instagram. "Ti amo in tutte le lingue del mondo" (I love you in all the languages of the world, editor's note), wrote the English-speaking Read, demonstrating his excellent Italian skills.

He fights for his dream This means Read will enter the new ski season with an extra dose of motivation. The Canadian has recently experienced challenging times in his sport, as he is no longer part of the national team and has to finance his season himself. "This is costing me more than $100.000," he recently wrote on Instagram. Nevertheless, Read intends to challenge himself once again in the Olympic season – perhaps for the last time in his career.
