Tragic skiing accident: 18-year-old French woman dead

First Matilde Lorenzi, then Marco Degli Uomini – and now Margot Simond. The skiing world is mourning the loss of the third young talent in six months. The Frenchwoman died on Thursday in a serious training crash.

This weekend, the second edition of the Red Bull Alpine Park, founded by Clement Noel, was supposed to take place in Val d'Isère. However, in the run-up to the race, 18-year-old Margot Simond suffered a tragic accident. The talented skier crashed during training runs at around 13 p.m. Although emergency services were immediately on the scene, Simond did not survive. On Thursday evening, the sad news spread.

The Red Bull Alpine Park is a hybrid of parallel slalom and slopestyle. Two riders start simultaneously and must negotiate jumps and other obstacles. Among the participants was Alex Vinatzer, a South Tyrolean. Italian Marta Rossetti was also scheduled to participate. The show event, which was supposed to be all about fun, has now been canceled.

Investigations initiated

The ski family has lost another rising talent due to a training crash. Simond was the reigning French junior slalom champion, participated in the first European Cup races this year, and represented her country at the Junior World Championships in Tarvisio. A 20th place finish in the slalom was her best result. The Albertville public prosecutor's office has already launched an investigation.
