Mikaela Shiffrin had to undergo an operation.

Unexpected surgery: A setback for Mikaela Shiffrin

Two weeks ago, Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a serious fall at her home race in Killington. Now the American has a nasty surprise.

A blessing in disguise: That was the common opinion when the diagnosis of Mikaela Shiffrin became public after her fall in Killington. The American had a spectacular fall in her home race and had to be taken off the slope by paramedics. Ligaments, bones and internal organs were fine, Shiffrin "only" sustained a stab wound to her stomach.

An injury that now appears to be somewhat more serious than originally thought. "I had to undergo a minor operation this week unexpectedly," says Shiffrin. "I was feeling a little unwell and it turned out that I had a small cavity that was deeper than the wound tract, which was filled with the old hematomas."

What will happen to Shiffrin now is unclear. Her return to the World Cup is likely to be further delayed, and a comeback before 2025 seems unlikely anyway. "I will keep you updated on what the next few weeks bring. I am so grateful for the wonderful care and support I have received," Shiffrin writes.
