Incredible Shiffrin: Slalom dominance and the crystal ball

Mikaela Shiffrin also dominated the women's slalom in Spindleruv Mlyn. The American celebrated her seventh victory of the season in this discipline and simultaneously secured the small crystal globe in the slalom standings.

Thick clouds rolled in over the upper part of the course in Spindleruv Mlyn (Czech Republic) during the first run and persisted stubbornly into the second – sunshine was nowhere to be seen during the women's slalom. However, the world's best female skiers weren't fazed: the snow conditions were excellent and held up until the very last racer. And in the second run, that racer – as so often before – was Mikaela Shiffrin. The American, starting from her privileged position, remained unfazed and confidently secured her seventh slalom victory of the season, as well as the small crystal globe in the discipline standings – her ninth overall.

In the first run, their lead was already 1,26 seconds. In the second run, another demonstration of power followed. Mikaela Shiffrin presented herself in absolutely top form just in time for the Olympic Games. The exceptional athlete underlined her dominance and her clear status as favorite for a medal in the last slalom before Milan/Cortina. In both the first and second runs, she gave the competition no chance and climbed to the top of the podium without any problems. Her final lead over second place was a full 1,67 seconds.

While Shiffrin skied her race unperturbed at the front, a much more exciting battle for the podium positions unfolded behind her. Several of the world's best skiers were closely bunched together, sensing their opportunity. Camille Rast launched the first major attack once again, setting her sights on the podium with a determined run and ultimately finishing second (+1,67). Emma Aicher couldn't keep up the pace and dropped back to third place (+2,18), while Wendy Holdener lost considerable ground after a mistake, slipping from second to fifth place (+2,35).

No South Tyrolean women participated in the Czech Republic. The best Italian was Emilia Mondielli in 20th place (+3,26), while Martina Peterlini also collected some points in 25th place (+4,14).
