Lindsey Vonn is doing well, considering the circumstances.

Vonn underwent another operation: "I know I'll be OK"

Ski star Lindsey Vonn has undergone another operation following her serious fall at the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Alongside a picture from her hospital bed, the 41-year-old wrote on Instagram three days after her crash in the Olympic downhill: "I had my third surgery today and it was successful. Success has a completely different meaning today than it did a few days ago." Vonn suffered a complex shin injury in her violent crash.

“I’m making progress, and even if it’s slow, I know I’ll be okay,” the American said. In the photo from the clinic in Italy, Vonn gives a thumbs-up with a tired expression. In the foreground, her injured left leg is visible, apparently wearing an external fixator. Doctors typically use this external support system to stabilize bones in cases of fractures.

Thank you for the "wonderful wave of love"

Vonn was taken to a hospital in Treviso, about 100 kilometers away, after her crash in Cortina d'Ampezzo. "Thank you to the incredible medical team, friends and family who were by my side, and for the wonderful wave of love and support from people all over the world," she wrote. She also congratulated her US teammates, who inspire her and give her something to celebrate.

Vonn once again left her future open. She had already announced before the Winter Games that she would retire from ski racing after this season at the latest. Shortly before the Olympics, she suffered a torn cruciate ligament in a racing accident, according to her own account, but still decided to participate in the Winter Games.

During the race in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where Vonn hoped to become Olympic champion once again, she caught her arm on a gate after just a few seconds. On the following jump, she twisted so badly that she crashed hard onto the slope.
