Just on Friday, Laura Pirovano celebrated her 125th World Cup start. their very first victoryJust one day later, the Trentino native secured the double victory – once again with a lead of 0,01 seconds. In perfect weather and superb conditions at the World Cup in Val di Fassa, the 28-year-old practically floated over the Pisa La Volata at the San Pellegrino Pass, crowning her graceful and agile run with the fastest time.
Behind Pirovano, Austrian Cornelia Hütter (2nd/+0,01 seconds) and Corinne Suter from Switzerland (3rd/+0,05) finished on the podium. Olympic champion Breezy Johnson followed a considerable distance behind in fourth place, 0,64 seconds back. Meanwhile, Germany's Emma Aicher suffered a bitter setback: before the race, it was considered a sure thing that the 22-year-old would take the red jersey in the downhill from the injured Lindsey Vonn. On Saturday, however, she finished in a disappointing twelfth place (+1,06) – and once again had to concede victory to Pirovano.
Pirovano has the best cards in the crystal showdown
The Italian, who unexpectedly re-entered the race for the small crystal globe on Friday, now travels to the World Cup Finals in Kvitfjell as the top-scoring downhill skier. Pirovano currently has 436 points, with Aicher following in second place with 408. The discipline title will be decided on March 21 in Norway. “My thoughts are really confused right now. This is simply unbelievable,” the winner said in an interview with the ORF and laughed: “Yesterday and today I was lucky with the hundredths of a second – now I think I’ve used up all my luck.”
Delago sisters score points
Nicol Delago finished as the second-best athlete on her team (9th/+1,03), with Sofia Goggia just two hundredths of a second behind (11th/+1,05). Nadia Delago finished 17th (+1,24). Sara Thaler, 21, from Val Gardena, is hoping for World Cup points, finishing 25th out of 40 racers (+1,63).
