Due to snow: European Cup in Reinswald already on Monday

Everything is ready in Reinswald for the 20th anniversary of the FIS Alpine Skiing European Cup. The event was moved forward to Monday and Tuesday at short notice due to a forecast of bad weather for Wednesday. Among those competing in the two women's Super-G races, alongside record holder Nadine Fest from Austria, will be seven skiers from South Tyrol, who will launch themselves from the starting gate onto the Schöneben slope.

Ninety female skiers from 17 nations have registered for the two Super-G races. "We are very pleased with this number. Compared to the other European Cup stops this season, we have quite a few more, which makes us very happy," says Luis Hofer, the coordinator of the Ski European Cup in Sarntal. One athlete stands out in particular: Nadine Fest will be competing again. The speed specialist from Carinthia is the "Queen of the Schöneben slope." With four wins, three second places, and one third place, she has more than earned this title as the reigning record holder. Austria has also entered two other athletes who have already stood on the podium in Sarntal at least once: Christina Ager (one win, one second place, and one third place) and Vanessa Nussbaumer (one third place).

Unsurprisingly, the largest contingent in the Sarntal Valley comes from the host nation, Italy. With 24 athletes, the "Azzurre" make up over a quarter of the participants in the European Cup in Reinswald. Seven of these skiers are from South Tyrol. The experienced European Cup competitors Sara Thaler (St. Ulrich) and Vicky Bernardi (Stern in Hochabtei) lead the local contingent, joined by the young Rita Granruaz (Abtei), Arianna Putzer (Wolkenstein), Ivy Schölzhorn (Sterzing), Nora Damian (Tiers), and Leonie Girtler (Mauls), the latter two still members of the South Tyrolean women's national team. Asja Zenere also deserves special mention; she secured the last Italian victory in Reinswald at the 18th edition of the event and will soon be competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.

Forecasted snowfall leads to new dates

South Tyrol experienced its first significant snowfall of the winter in recent days. "We conducted our snow check last Sunday, and there was very little fresh snow then. Now there's a bit more, but it's been manageable, so no extra work on the slopes was necessary. The scenery is, of course, magnificent now; everything is white," reports Hofer. At the same time, more snowfall is forecast for Wednesday, February 4th. Therefore, Hofer and his team, in consultation with the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the individual teams, have put together a new program.

The first Super-G is now scheduled for Monday instead of Tuesday. "The start time has been set for 11:30 a.m., as the timekeepers need to set everything up properly on Monday before the race. The second Super-G will then take place on Tuesday, as usual at 10:00 a.m.," Hofer updated.

He and his team are particularly looking forward to the anniversary, as the European Cup is making its 20th stop in Reinswald. "The preparations are more or less complete. The athletes will be accommodated in our partner hotels, where they will want for nothing. So, the 20th FIS Alpine Skiing European Cup in the Sarntal Valley can begin. We're looking forward to exciting races again," Hofer concludes.
