World Cup in Garmisch: Everyday life returns

After the 2026 Winter Olympics, where the men's ski races were held in Bormio, the World Cup season returns to normal. This weekend, the speed races are on the program in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

A downhill and a Super-G will take place on the legendary Kandahar slope on Saturday and Sunday. The World Cup in Bavaria kicks off on Thursday with the first training run. A total of nine Italian athletes will be competing – including the four South Tyroleans Dominik Paris, Florian Schieder, Christof Innerhofer, and the young Val Gardena native Max Perathoner.

The squad is completed by Giovanni Franzoni, Benjamin Alliod, Guglielmo Bosca, Mattia Casse, and Marco Abbruzzese. Italy's hopes in Garmisch rest primarily on Franzoni and Paris, who also won the only two medals for the men at the Olympics.

For Paris, who won here eight years ago, fulfilling his long-awaited dream of winning the Downhill World Cup will be nearly impossible this year. Marco Odermatt (510 points) is clearly in the lead ahead of his fellow Swiss, Franjo von Allmen (395). With 296 points – three downhills remaining – Paris is still in third place.
