Sad greetings from the sickbed: Lisa Grill has been seriously injured.

Two broken hearts in Austria's ski team

As the ski season inexorably heads towards the World Championships, there were some big tears in Austria's women's ski team.

Skiing is fascinating, spectacular and extremely exciting. But it can also be brutal. Winter after winter, it becomes clear that a serious injury, a proverbial flight to the hospital, is lurking around every corner. Two Austrian ski ladies can tell you all about it.

Lisa Grill, 24-year-old all-rounder from Salzburg, and Vanessa Nussbaumer, 26-year-old speed specialist from Vorarlberg, announced the end of their respective seasons within a few hours – with a broken heart included.

Almost 1.000 days off – now seriously injured again

Grill, who is one of the skiing hopes with several medals at Junior World Championships, was hit particularly hard. Shortly before the turn of the year, the Austrian fell while free skiing and broke her leg. "A broken heart, a broken leg, two operations and two weeks in hospital later, I'm finally back home," she wrote on Instagram.

The young skier, who has been in the World Cup squad several times, is at a loss for words. "I never thought that something like this would happen again. And to be honest, I don't know what to say now." What the Austrian means: Back in February 2021, Grill suffered a broken tibia and fibula, which put her out of action for almost 1.000 days. Now the next difficult challenge for the young skier.
"I'm still in a lot of pain." Vanessa Nussbaumer

Vanessa Nussbaumer also had to swallow a bitter pill. She broke her tibia and fibula during training a year ago and wanted to start again this year after a break of several months. But now the Vorarlberg native is ending her season early.

"I still have a lot of pain when I ski, so I decided to have the nails removed from my leg. I will be back next season," said the 26-year-old, who added a broken heart emoji to her Instagram post. A long road back now begins for Nussbaumer and Grill.
