Two medals for South Tyrol – and one shines particularly brightly

Hannes Zingerle had only announced his retirement on Monday. Three days later, the Val Badia native once again demonstrated his skills at the Italian Championships in Sestriere.

Zingerle announced his resignation with an emotional post on social media. On Thursday, the 30-year-old finished third in the giant slalom at the Italian Championships. Zingerle improved his position by two places in the final run. He was half a second behind the winner, Giovanni Borsotti. The 35-year-old Borsotti became national champion for the first time in 15 years. His last title came in 2011 in the Super-G in La Thuile.

Top favorite Alex Vinatzer had to settle for second place behind Borsotti. The Val Gardena native was 26 hundredths of a second behind the new Italian champion. Filippo Della Vite finished fourth, narrowly missing out on bronze to Zingerle. Tobias Kastlunger was the third-best South Tyrolean, finishing fifth.

Enneberger finished just under a second behind Borsotti. Max Perathoner (12th) and Simon Maurberger (14th) also finished in the top 20. Maurberger, like Zingerle, will retire from skiing after the season. The Italian Championships in Sestriere conclude on Friday with the two slalom races.
