“Let’s go, Martina!” Laura Pirovano shouted into the TV camera after her run in the Olympic team combined event on the Olimpia delle Tofane. Despite starting with bib number six, the 28-year-old Italian already knew that her time of 1:36.86 minutes in the downhill provided a promising foundation for her medal bid – and she was right. After 28 starters, only two athletes were ahead of the skier from Trentino: Breezy Johnson, who had led at the halfway point, was 0,27 seconds faster than the Italian, while the Austrian was just 0,21 seconds ahead.
From 14.00 p.m. (live on SportNews(Ticker) the hosts of the Winter Games are therefore aiming for a medal in the slalom. Peterlini, who also hails from Trentino and whose best World Cup result is seventh place, could hardly face a greater challenge: Her team, which includes downhill Olympic champion Johnson, also features ski queen Mikaela Shiffrin; the two Americans already won gold in the team combined at the 2025 World Championships in Saalbach. Furthermore, Paula Moltzan (4th/+0,45/USA2), Katharina Truppe (5th/+0,60), and Emma Aicher (6th/+0,74/Germany) are also launching a comeback bid in the Olympic debut of this discipline.
The Delago sisters are further back in the list.
Besides Pirovano, three other Italian athletes were in action on Tuesday morning. Nicol Delago from Val Gardena finished in tenth place, while her 17-year-old teammate Anna Trocker from Fiè allo Sciliar will start her Olympic debut 1,16 seconds behind Johnson.Nadia Delago in the team combined event at the Olympic Games. © APA/afp / STEFANO RELLANDINI
Nadia Delago, on the other hand, had a bad day and had to settle for 20th place (+2,83). Giada d'Antonio, the 16-year-old prodigy from Naples, will at least attempt a small comeback in the slalom. For Sofia Goggia and Lara della Mea, however, the dream of a medal has already been shattered: Goggia crashed but remained uninjured.
