Incident in the Burgtheater: Ex-skier in the middle

The Burgtheater in Vienna is world-famous for great drama. The history of the theater dates back to 1748 and has always been inextricably linked to drama. At a performance of Goethe's Faust last week, a second drama took place at the same time: several supporters of the last generation, including the ex-ski professional Julian Schütter, stood up during the performance and took the floor.

In a video that Schütter shared on Instagram yesterday, the clash between society is clearly noticeable: While Schütter, without being asked, accuses the greed for fossil resources and predicts a bleak future, a large part of the Viennese theater audience doesn't want to hear about it. Some shout “Shut up!” or ask him to leave the hall.

But no one would have expected the reaction of the theater management, because those responsible listened to the protesters for half an hour. Afterwards, those who disturbed the peace were given time to speak on stage and could present their concerns. However, by this point, the majority of the audience had already left the hall.

Schütter writes on Instagram: “Last week I and other people from the last generation disrupted the performance of Goethe's Faust in the Burgtheater because, like Faust, our government made a pact with the devil. We expected to be dragged out of the hall after a few minutes, but instead, after a half-hour disruption, we were given 8 minutes of speaking time on stage, a lot of applause, approval and solidarity from the audience, the ensemble and the management and were allowed to watch the piece even watch it finished. This experience gives me a lot of strength and hope.”

Schütter is fighting on the front line It is not Schütter's first protest: the 26-year-old repeatedly uploads pictures and videos of his fight against the prevailing politics, always alongside the last generation. The accusation is that those responsible are acting too lamely, overlooking the climate goals and not wanting to face the bitter reality.

During his active time, Schütter was part of the Austrian B squad and specialized in the downhill and super-G disciplines. In 2019 he came second at the Junior World Championships in Val di Fassa. Even before he could achieve any notable World Cup or World Cup successes, he gave up his professional career at the end of February this year. The reason for this was that after a knee injury in 2023, he lost his passion and not his activism.
