A spectacular crash finale in ski cross

Italy's Olympic heroes came away empty-handed from the Ski Cross World Cup premiere in Kopaonik, Serbia. However, the focus was on a mass crash in the grand final.

Trentino's Olympic champion Simone Deromedis failed to advance from the semifinals and ultimately finished in eighth place. He also struggled to find his form in Friday's small final. As a result, Deromedis lost points in the overall World Cup standings to leader Reece Howden. The Canadian was disqualified in the big final after all three of his competitors crashed and finished fourth.

What happened? Howden and the German Florian Wilmsmann's skis became entangled immediately after the start. According to the jury, Howden did so unfairly. The victory therefore went to the German Tim Hronek, ahead of the Canadian Kevin Drury, who, according to initial images, was seriously injured and got caught in the safety netting. Wilmsmann was awarded third place.

Italy's silver medalist Federico Tomasoni was eliminated in the round of 16, as was Yanick Gunsch from Matsch.
