Spanish double success at the Marmotta Trophy

In wonderful weather, no fewer than 267 athletes were registered. The external conditions couldn't have been better and so all participants were full of praise for the event, especially for the perfect route in the middle of the snow-covered mountains of the Ortler-Cevedale Group. and spoke of a World Cup race taking place in South Tyrol for the first time.

The race started promptly at 9.00 a.m. at the former Hotel Paradiso in Hintermartell with the women's category. They had to cover a 9.6 km long route with an altitude difference of 1.347 m. The two favorites Mireia Mirò Varela (ESP), two-time world champion and leader in the overall ranking, and Laetitia Roux from France took the lead right from the start. But after a short time it became clear that the 23-year-old Spaniard could not be beaten today.

Almost Effortlessly broke away from the rest of the field and reached the finish as the dominant winner after 1.31,27:1,27 hours. The Frenchwoman Roux was the only one who was able to keep up with the young Spaniard and finished second, 10 minutes behind. Nathalie Etzensperger (SUI) in third place was almost 4 minutes behind the winner. The best of the Italian team was Fracesca Martinelli in XNUMXth place.

For the men, who had to climb 1.757 meters over a distance of 13,6 km, a relatively close result was expected in the run-up to the race. And so the entire field was relatively close together on the first climb. After the first descent we started the second climb and even then it seemed as if no one could pull away. About halfway through the second climb there was a carrying section where participants had to unbuckle their skis and carry them on their backpacks. At this point the favorites picked up the pace for the first time, especially the Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada. After a short time, the pursuers gradually retreated. Burgada was relatively clear in the lead, followed by the Frenchman William Bon Mardion and the young Italian Robert Antonioli.

The final descent went into this order and so the race for the podium places seemed already decided. But on the technically difficult last descent, Bon Mardion fell, injured himself slightly and was unable to finish the race. The young Robert Antonioli from Valtellina came to a surprising second place, behind the clear winner Burgada from Spain and ahead of Marc Pinsach Rubirola, the second of the strong Spanish team, who came in third.

Three other “Azzurri” landed in fourth to sixth place: Pietro Lanfranchi, Matteo Eydallin and Michele Boscacci. The local hero Manfred Reichegger from Ahrntal struggled with flu during the week and had to settle for 8th place. The Swiss Martin Anthamatten, who has previously been the leader in the World Cup, did not have a good day today. He only finished 17th and had to hand over the lead in the overall World Cup to Burgada.

In addition to the ISMF World Cup, a FISI race also took place as part of the Marmotta Trophy. Among the men, the strong South Tyrolean Friedl Mair prevailed. Elena Nicolini was the fastest among women. The German Philipp Reiter was the clear winner among the juniors and first place among the candidates went to Andrea Greco. The experienced Franco Nicolini won the Masters ahead of local hero Anton Steiner.
