Coratti: “They were happy for us, we were happy for them”

The South Tyrolean festival at the Snowboard World Championships continued on Sunday with Jasmin Coratti and Gabriel Messner winning silver medals. Jasmin Coratti talks about her big day in an interview.

Jasmin Coratti, along with Gabriel Messner, sensationally secured the silver medal at the Snowboard World Championships in Engadin, Switzerland, on Sunday. In the team competition, the two South Tyroleans were only beaten by teammates Maurizio Bormolini and Elisa Caffont. Coratti willingly answered a few questions on Monday afternoon about her glorious day, on which she celebrated the greatest success of her career to date – despite the 23-year-old being ill throughout the race weekend.

Sportnews: Congratulations on your first World Championship medal. How did you experience yesterday?

Jasmin Coratti: It was very unexpected. We knew we were good and, I think, we'd consistently delivered strong performances throughout the entire season. But I didn't expect it to actually be enough for a medal.

The final saw an internal team duel against Maurizio Bormolini and Elisa Caffont. Was there perhaps even more spice in that?

I have to say we were happy to even make it to the final. Of course, it's always different against teammates because you know how they ride and where they're strong. But it was a great final; they were happy for us, and we were happy for them. I've already said that our silver medal shines like a gold one.

How does it feel to have already achieved this milestone of a World Championship medal at the age of only 23?

Well, I was sick over the weekend. The giant slalom didn't go well, but the slalom was better. I didn't think I'd actually win a medal. It's unbelievable.

What was it like to achieve this success with Gabriel Messner?

It was great. We competed in every team event together this season, and he always helped me. When things didn't go well, he never blamed me if I made a mistake. We're a great team, which is why things went so well.

Have you had time to properly celebrate the medal?

No, I haven't. I was sick the entire weekend. I somehow still managed to pull through in the race; it's probably the adrenaline. I'll wait until I'm fully recovered to celebrate.
