Emanuel Perathoner: Unstoppable on the road to double gold

Emanuel Perathoner has won his next gold medal at the Paralympics in Milan and Cortina.

Five days after his Olympic victory in snowboard cross, Perathoner followed it up with another triumph in the banked slalom. The 39-year-old from Lajen posted the fastest time in both runs. Even before his final run on Friday, Perathoner had already secured the gold medal. Nevertheless, he risked everything one last time and shattered his previous best time by 82 hundredths of a second.

Perathoner used to compete in snowboard cross at the Olympics, but after a serious training injury in 2021, he fought his way back as a para-athlete – and now the South Tyrolean has stood atop the podium twice at his home Games. His jubilation and relief were evident at the finish line. "I have no words for it and am simply enjoying the moment," Perathoner explained in the immediately following TV interview.

A dominant victory

Overall, Perathoner won the banked slalom, in which athletes race against the clock on a course, with a lead of just over two seconds over Switzerland's Fabrice von Grüningen. Bronze went to Australian Ben Tudhope. Perathoner completed the course in 54,28 seconds.
