After Olympic disappointment: Bormolini strikes back

At the World Cup in Krynica, Poland, Roland Fischnaller was the best South Tyrolean, finishing in sixth place. The day's victory went to Maurizio Bormolini.

Four South Tyrolean athletes qualified for the round of 16 in the parallel giant slalom. However, Aaron March (Völs/15th) was unlucky: he lost to South Korean Lee Sang-ho only after a photo finish.

Daniele Bagozza (St. Ulrich/11th) also had to say goodbye – in the direct South Tyrolean duel, he lost to Fischnaller. Tommy Rabanser (Gröden/14th) was defeated by Tim Mastnak. The Slovenian later also proved to be a stumbling block for Fischnaller: In the fight for a place in the semi-finals, "Fisch" missed out by a mere 0,18 seconds.

Bormolini triumphs

Nevertheless, the ever-successful Italians had reason to celebrate. The fastest qualifier, Bormolini from Livigno, was in superb form – unlike at the recent home races – and proved unbeatable. In the final, the 32-year-old clearly defeated Lee (+0,71 seconds). Third place went to Canadian Arnaud Gaudet, who beat Mastnak in the small final.

In the battle for the overall World Cup title, Bormolini leads with 620 points after 12 of 17 events. Behind him are March (557), the Austrian Benjamin Karl (517) and Fischnaller (495).

In the women's race, Tsubaki Miki triumphed ahead of Zuzana Maderová and Ramona Hofmeister. The best Italian was Elisa Caffont in fourth place. Jasmin Coratti (Langtaufers) finished 13th. The next parallel giant slalom is already scheduled for Sunday in Krynica.
