An intensive week of sports brings numerous successes

Last week too, South Tyrol's winter sports enthusiasts were in action up and down the country. Not only did they show their skills in a variety of competitions, but they also achieved some success.

An overview of the most important events involving the local athletes of the state squad.


Snowboard: The team shines across the board

Two FIS parallel slaloms were on the program at the weekend in Gosau, Austria, in which the state squad athletes demonstrated their skills. On the first day of competition, Manuel Haller (ASV Burgstall) and Tommy Rabanser (ASV Snowboard Gherdëina) secured a South Tyrolean double victory. Among the snowboarders, Anna Mammone (ASV Welschnofen) made it onto the podium in third place. The next day, Simon Dorfmann (ASV Villnöß), who took second place, and Sophie Rabanser from Val Gardena, who came third, struck.

Cross-country skiing: Schwitzer with double gold in Schlinig

The Italian Cup races in Schlinig were also counted as Italian championships in the U20 (Juniores) and U18 (Aspiranti) age groups. Marie Schwitzer from Sarnen – an athlete in the state squad until last year – won U18 gold in the sprint and in the distance race over 10 km in the classic technique. In this category, Marta Belotti narrowly missed the podium in fifth (sprint) and fourth (10 km), as did Marit Folie in the U20 (4th over 10 km). In the general age group, which was only counted for the Italian Cup, ex-biathlete Federica Sanfilippo won the women's sprint ahead of Sara Hutter, who also came second in the distance race on Sunday. In the men's sprint, Michael Hellweger from Sarner achieved the best time in the qualification, but fell back to sixth place in the final due to a mishap.

Biathlon: The “young wild ones” strong at the Italian Championships in Bionaz

While the ski hunter elite were in action at the World Cup in Ruhpolding (Germany) and the IBU Cup in Ridnaun, the Italian sprint and pursuit champions were crowned at the weekend in Bioanz (Aosta). In the U18 age group sprint, the young women had a double victory on Saturday by the Val Gardena twin sisters Thea (1st) and Tanja (2nd) Wanker. Among the young men, the South Tyrolean biathletes took positions one to seven, with the medals going to Jonas Tscholl (Martell), Julian Huber and Jan Steinkasserer (both Antholz). Birgit Schölzhorn took silver in the junior female age group. 24 hours later, Tscholl and Thea Wanker followed up with gold in the pursuit. Huber came second again, while this time Aaron Niederstätter (Ridnaun) took third place. This time Schölzhorn was able to win, while Felix Ratschiller (Martell), a South Tyrolean from South Tyrol, also won the gold medal among young men of the same age.

Biathlon: Hubert Leitgeb Trophy visits St. Kassian

The Hubert Leitgeb trophy powered by Raiffeisen continued in St. Kassian on Sunday. An individual competition was held, which was also counted as a state championship. 124 young biathletes took part.

Natural track tobogganing: Paur/Hofer shine at the home World Cup in Latsch

The state squad made people sit up and take notice with strong results at the Junior Natural Track Luge World Cup in Latsch. Tobias Paur and Andreas Hofer won the doubles. In the young women's single-seater, Lotte Mulser took fifth place as the best state team athlete, while Andreas Hofer was able to impress in sixth place. Alex Oberhofer and Jenny Castiglioni, two South Tyrolean tobogganers, were also victorious here, but they are no longer part of the state squad.
