From March 2nd to 6th, athletes from all over Italy gathered to compete in various winter sports. The majority of the competitions took place in the Ovindoli ski resort. Around 50 athletes from the clubs Sport & Friends, Lebenshilfe, Sportclub Meran, and Sportclub Grole represented South Tyrol in alpine and cross-country skiing. They won numerous medals and achieved many other excellent results in these competitions.
Besides sporting achievements, team spirit, enjoyment of sport, and fair play were paramount. The games offer people with cognitive disabilities the opportunity to compete athletically, experience community, and actively practice inclusion. "These days have shown how much power sport possesses. Our athletes impressed with their dedication, enthusiasm, and team spirit. We are incredibly proud of their performances," says Martha Stocker, President of Special Olympics Team South Tyrol.
Positive conclusion
“Our athletes have shown outstanding performances in both alpine and cross-country skiing. We were particularly impressed by their enthusiasm, team spirit, and joy in the sport – that's exactly what makes Special Olympics so special,” explained Karl Hofer from the Merano Sports Club and Roland Schroffenegger, President of Lebenshilfe South Tyrol, in unison. The skiers also had plenty of fun.
With medals, valuable experiences, and unforgettable memories, the Special Olympics Team South Tyrol is heading home. A special thank you goes to the coaches, supervisors, and all the supporters who made this successful week possible.
