Italy fends off Russian hacker attacks

A few days before the start of the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy fended off several Russian hacker attacks.

The cyberattacks targeted several Winter Olympic venues, including hotels in Cortina, said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Facilities within his ministry were also affected. During a visit to Washington, Tajani emphasized that the attacks originated in Russia and thanked the security forces who thwarted them.

“Cybersecurity is becoming a key factor, so I am very pleased. Of course, we have informed all other relevant authorities,” the minister continued.

As reported by Italian media, local authorities have made early preparations for the risks of cyberattacks during the Winter Games. A team of specialists is reportedly working with experts from the Games organizers to defend against attacks on the major event. The Winter Games begin on Friday and run until February 22.
