The town of 10.000 inhabitants in the Allgäu region of Germany prevailed over the Slovenian ski jumping mecca of Planica, as announced by the FIS after a digital meeting of the Council on Tuesday. The Nordic World Ski Championships will feature the sports of ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and Nordic combined.
“I would like to congratulate Oberstdorf on a remarkable candidacy,” said FIS President Alexander Ospelt, praising Oberstdorf as “one of the most important places in the world for Nordic skiing.” It was the first major decision in the term of the Liechtenstein native, who in June had succeeded the controversial former FIS boss Johan Eliasch in a contested election.
This marks the fourth time Oberstdorf has been selected as a World Championship venue. The Allgäu region last hosted the championships in 2021; those events, held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, went down in history as taking place without spectators.
