Olympics 2026 | South Tyrol's medal chances on Wednesday

From a South Tyrolean perspective, Wednesday in Milan/Cortina offers a packed program: medal decisions in several disciplines and the start of the Olympic ice hockey tournament.

The magic of the Olympics continues on Wednesday. On the sixth day of the Games in Milan/Cortina, there's plenty more in store for South Tyrolean sports fans. Several athletes from the region could win medals in various competitions. In addition, one of the winter's biggest highlights for many fans begins.


But let's take it one step at a time. The first medal event relevant to South Tyrol begins at 10 a.m. with the Nordic Combined. The two top athletes from Val Gardena will be competing. Aaron Kostner and Samuel Costa Probably only outside chances, but as they say: The great stories are written at the Olympics.

A medal in the second men's alpine skiing event would be somewhat less surprising – but just as celebrated. At 11:30 a.m., the world's best speed skiers will once again hurtle down the infamous Stelvio. But that's not all, because from 2:15 pm onwards the focus shifts to Antholz, where Dorothea Wierer and Hannah Auchentaller They want to conquer the South Tyrolean cross-country ski track in the best possible way. "Doro" has already won a medal in the team competition at her last Games – will a second one follow?

The luge competitions continue on Wednesday with the doubles events. Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer as well as the men's teams with Ivan Nagler, Fabian Malleier, Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner Races featuring a full force of South Tyrolean talent will follow. The women start at 5 pm, while the men begin at 5:50 pm.

The ice hockey festival begins

And in the evening, the moment finally arrives: The men's Olympic ice hockey tournament opens its doors. At 9:10 p.m., the Azzurri take to the ice of the Santa Giulia Arena in Milan for the first time. The South Tyrolean players will be among those facing... Alex Trivellato, Damian Clara, Gianluca Vallini, Daniel Glira, Diego Kostner and Tommy Purdeller on Sweden, one of the great powers of sport.

What makes this tournament special is the return of NHL stars after a long absence. Names like Elias Pettersson, Mika Zibanejad, Rasmus Dahlin, and Victor Hedman promise a great show – one that the Blue Team will try to match. Perhaps they can even pull off an upset.
