Winter sports ticker | Italy's ski jumpers show off

Winter sports are currently in high season: What's happening outside of the big World Cup decisions in biathlon, alpine skiing and the like can be found in our winter sports ticker.

SKI JUMPING: The Austrian ski jumpers won the World Cup team competition in Zakopane in a confident manner. The ÖSV quartet with high-flyers Stefan Kraft, Jan Hörl, Manuel Fettner and Michael Hayböck won on Saturday in Poland with 1,146,6 points, clearly ahead of Slovenia (-51,1) and Germany (-83,8). Italy's quartet of Francesco Cecon, Andrea Campregher, Giovanni Bresadola and Alex Insam from Val Gardena somewhat surprisingly made it into the second round and took eighth place.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: The Azzurro Federico Pellegrino impressed with 20th place in the mass start over 5 kilometers at the World Cup race in Oberhof. The Aosta native was only 2,1 seconds slower than the victorious Erik Valnes. Only Norwegians finished ahead of Pellegrino: Valnes won ahead of Martin Lowstroem Nyenget (+0,9 seconds), Paal Golberg (+1,6) and Mattis Stenshagen. Dietmar Nöckler from Bruneck made it into the points in 28th place (+1.28 minutes). In the women's category, Sweden's Frida Karlsson won ahead of Germany's Katharina Hennig (+2,3) and Finland's Kerttu Niskanen (+7,5). Trentino's Caterina Ganz came in 17th as the best Azzurra.

SKI JUMPING: Slovenia with Nika Prevc and Nika Kriznar won the women's World Cup super team competition on Saturday. Canada and Austria followed on the other podium places. Jessica and Lara Malsiner competed for Italy. The Val Gardena sisters ended up in 9th place.
