Swimming World Cup: A 14-year-old world record has been broken

Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan created a big moment at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

It was on July 29, 2009, when Italy's swimming icon Federica Pellegrini set a new world record in the 200 meter freestyle - and in her hometown of Rome. This record stood for 14 years, and the swimming stars bit their teeth on it for 14 years. But now the record has fallen.

On Wednesday, almost to the day after Pellegrini's finest hour, the Australian Mollie O'Callaghan performed brilliantly in the Fukuoka pool and swam to the gold medal in the World Championship race. The final sprint in particular was brilliant. And so O'Callaghan broke Pellegrini's record by 13 hundredths of a second, i.e. with a time of 1.52,85:30.000 minutes. The Australian will receive prize money of $XNUMX.
