Four weeks until the Penser Joch Grand Prix

For decades, Tyrolean cyclists were responsible for running the popular mountain race on the Penser Joch. It has been organized by the ASC Sarntal/Rad Section for eleven years now. With a lot of commitment, OC boss Hartmann Stuefer and his numerous volunteers are trying to score points with cyclists from South Tyrol, but especially from the other regions of northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, and get them to take part.

This year's edition of the Grand Prix Penser Joch will take place on Saturday, August 20th. As always, the start is at 14.30 p.m. in Sarnthein. The field of participants then rolls together at a controlled speed to Astfeld (1021 meters). This is where the mountain race really begins. Participants can expect a 26-kilometer route with 1190 meters of elevation gain along the Alpenrosenstraße, especially in the final part.

Who will follow Gschnitzer and Ilmer?

Last year, Thomas Gschnitzer won the men's event. After two second places, the Vipiteno native prevailed in the Sarntal for the first time in August 2015 with a time of 59.23 minutes. Gschnitzer relegated Michael Tumler and Michael Obrist to their places. The women's race was won by three-time winner Marina Ilmer (1:05.41 hours). Ilmer also holds the course record for women. Three years ago she drove up the Penser Joch in 1:04.13 hours. For men, Philip Götsch set the record of 2011 minutes in 56.21.

Traditionally, the Penser Joch Grand Prix is not just about individual victory. This year, too, the most successful team will be presented with the hand-carved “Moser Bau” trophy. Last year, the Trentino team Brao Caffè – Unterthurner was happy about this.

250 euros for a new course record

As part of the prize distribution, which takes place from 18 p.m. at the sports field in Sarnthein, the fastest three racers in each category (12 in total) as well as the cyclist who is closest to the average time of all participants will also be awarded. And if a starter breaks the course record, there will also be a bonus of 250 euros.

In addition to a nice finisher T-shirt and a voucher for the Pasta Party, there will also be a raffle for great non-cash prizes for participants. The only requirement is to be present at the prize distribution, during which the raffle takes place.
