World Cup expert panel: Denise Karbon predicts giant slalom...

The now 38-year-old from Castelrotto was one of the best Italian ski racing had to offer for over a decade. She ended her active career five years ago. Karbon was known for being in top form, especially at world championships, and she recorded a total of five top 4 results in her six World Cup participations. In 2003, the giant slalomist finished second on the podium in St. Moritz, and four years later she took bronze in Åre. So she knows how to go all out in the Swedish World Cup venue.

Denise Karbon about... … favorites and secret favorites in the women’s giant slalom: “There is a very large group of medal candidates in this discipline. But the top favorite is certainly Mikaela Shiffrin, who simply has enormous class and can pace a run like no other. Federica Brignone, Viktoria Rebensburg, Tessa Worley and Petra Vlhová are most likely to be dangerous, although I see the last two at a slight disadvantage due to their rather rough skiing style on this snow.”

… the chances of the “Azzurre”: “Federica Brignone has the best cards among the Italians. She rides a round line and puts everything on the waist, which can benefit her on the grippy surface in Åre. I also believe that the strong and self-confident Marta Bassino can achieve a top result. Sofia Goggia is a real surprise, but due to her lack of training in the giant slalom, I don't think she's a hot candidate for the podium. It’s a shame that, of all things, there is no South Tyrolean at the start in my favorite race.”

… their best World Cup experience: “My first medal in 2003 in St. Moritz was certainly special, but I had the best World Cup moments in Åre. Due to the early darkness, the decision will be held under spotlights, which creates a very special atmosphere. I will never forget the moment when I received the bronze medal at Medal Plaza.”

…difficulties in a World Championship race: “It’s this all-or-nothing moment. This has benefited me enormously, but there are runners who find this feeling difficult. I was never one of the gold contenders and was able to drive off with some freedom, but the big favorites have extreme pressure on them that can inhibit and unsettle you. It’s also important not to get distracted by all the hustle and bustle during a World Cup and to always keep your cool.”
