Pursuit in Östersund: The surprise woman wins again

At the end of the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund (SWE), the pursuit races were on the program on Sunday afternoon. In the women's race, the 10 kilometer victory went to Lou Jeanmonnot.

The Frenchwoman Lou Jeanmonnot went after hers Premiere victory on Friday as the first athlete onto the trail, Lisa Vittozzi (9), Dorothea Wierer (17) and Rebecca Passler (18) followed in waiting.

Vittozzi made no mistakes in the first prone position, which meant she gained 2 positions in the intermediate classification. Wierer also hit all the targets, while Passler had to do 2 penalty laps. Shortly after the shooting range, Jeanmonnot was caught by the chasing group led by Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (NOR), despite shooting perfectly.

In the second prone stage, Vittozzi and Wierer once again remained flawless, with their teammates staying on track in intermediate positions 8 and 10. Passler also cleared all the targets.

Wierer makes a mistake at the shooting range

The Germans Vanessa Voigt and Franziska Preuss led the group to the first standing stage; a total of 17 athletes had made no mistakes up to that point. Vittozzi again made no mistakes, while Wierer put her third shot wide of the target.

In the final test with the rifle, pole position belonged to Vogt, but the German had to go into the penalty loop while Jeanmonnot made no mistakes and took the lead. At the finish there was a spurt between Franziska Preuss and Jeanmonnot, the Frenchwoman held on and celebrated her second World Cup victory after her debut victory on Friday.

Vittozzi missed the last shot while Wierer made no mistakes. In the end, it was enough for the two Azzurres to finish 9th and 14th with a “lap of honor” each. With 4 errors, Rebecca Passler slipped back to 29th place, Hannah Auchentaller (4) missed the points in 45th place.
