Anthem dispute: Trump disinvites NFL champion Philadelphia

Washington (SID) US President Donald Trump has disinvited the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles because of the anthem dispute and canceled the traditional reception of the champions of the professional football league NFL in the White House planned for Tuesday. Several Eagles players had previously stated that they would boycott the meeting with the controversial Trump. According to the New York Times, fewer than ten team members had confirmed their attendance at the ceremony. "The Philadelphia Eagles cannot come with their entire team," Trump was quoted as saying in a statement: "They are arguing with their president just because he insists that they stand with their hands on their hearts during the anthem for the great men and to honor women of our military and the people of our country." For almost two years, NFL players have repeatedly kneeled during the playing of the US anthem to protest against racism, social injustice and police violence. The action, which was carried out for the first time by then San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, was also joined by athletes outside of football. Trump had repeatedly railed against what he considered to be unpatriotic players. From the start of the new season, kneeling during the anthem will be punishable. Only complete absence from the anthem is permitted. "So many lies," wide receiver Torrey Smith wrote on Twitter: "No one turned down the meeting just because Trump wants us to stand for the anthem. And the president continues to spread the false narrative that the players are against the military. " Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said the disinvitation simply shows that "the president is not a true patriot, but a weak egomaniac who is afraid to host a party that no one wants to go to." He also explained: “Our town hall is always open for a celebration.”
